The Anh Sang Sightless Children’s Sponsoring Center in Lagi, Vietnam, takes in blind children from poor families in Southern Vietnam, and provides specialist education in areas such as learning braille, English, arts and crafts, music and developing self-sufficiency skills, to those whose families can’t afford such services or couldn’t otherwise access them.
An Australian expat living in Vietnam as a Resort General Manager, Kristy Marland (pictured above), has recently established a new fundraising initiative to support the Center. Kristy has been involved and supported the Center for a number of years, volunteering her personal time and money to support the Center. The fundraising initiative is seeking to raise USD$100,000 to relocate the Centre from Lagi to a more suitable location in Mui Ne. Lagi, where the Center is currently located, is a small town with few employment opportunities for the blind, and the current facility is prone to flooding during the rainy season, when the children’s dormitories become inundated with muddy water. The tourist town of Mui Ne is a much more suitable location for the Centre, where the Centre’s students will, once they are old enough, be able to find employment at local resorts and restaurants, and at events such as the Mui Ne Street Food Festival, where they can also sell their crafts and perform music. There is also a plan to include a café at the new Center, where day tours to Mui Ne’s famous sand dunes will stop for a coffee at the end of their tours. Visitors will also be able to enjoy live music and buy the jewelry and crafts made at the Center in the cafe’s gift shop. Thankfully, a parcel of land has been donated in the tourist town of Mui Ne for the proposed new Centre to be built, however this land does not have buildings, electricity or water, and as such, almost US$100,000 is required to build suitable facilities and relocate the Centre from Lagi to Mui Ne. All donations received will be transferred in their entirety to the Anh Sang Sightless Children’s Sponsoring Center’s bank account in Vietnam.
